Stuck on progress bar + verbose mode

I have tried restarting my MacBook Air several times but it always stop in the progress bar for several days now. I have not been able to get past the progress bar in my user and guest modes.

I’ve tried restarting it several times and it has always been stuck in at least 80% of the progress bar. I read some forms online and they suggested to shut down my computer and press Command + V to put in the verbose mood. This is the last of the code that’s being shown, it hasn’t moved for several minutes now what is the next action that I should take.

Interesting... those are some strange symptoms. I thought that your situation would apply to macOS Catalina and later since those macOS's use separate System and Data volumes, explaining why launchd (a Mac system process) could run but not find its LaunchDaemons. High Sierra is a different beast.

If I recall correctly, "logging in" to the Guest user with FileVault on actually just boots macOS Recovery and loads Safari automatically. Did you have the official Guest user enabled on your Mac, or did you just make a separate account named "guest"?

Either way, it seems that something is seriously corrupted and your data could be potentially inaccessible. Does your Mac have any critical data that isn't backed up elsewhere? Or is it safe to erase your Mac if need be?

Thanks for posting those Verbose Mode screenshots! There's a couple of concerning messages I'm seeing in the log:

com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] <com.apple.xpc.launchd.domain.system> <Error>: Could not read path = /Library/LaunchDaemons, ... no such file or directory

apfs_keybad_unlock_record_tag:1632: failed to unwrap volume key, err = -536878206 (tag = 2)

apfs_vfsop_mount:1310: apfs_mount failed, err: 22

This indicates that if FileVault is enabled on your Mac, there might be an issue with unlocking and accessing your data.

I have a couple of questions regarding your setup:

When you power on your Mac, does an Apple logo and progress bar appear before the Login Window? Or, do you see an Apple logo, enter your password at the Login Window, and then a progress bar appears?

If you can reach the Login Window, what wallpaper appears? Is it any one of these:
- A pink/purple graphic with shapes of hills (macOS Monterey)
- A graphic fading from purple at the bottom to orange in the middle, with some blue and white in the top right corner (macOS Big Sur)
- A picture of a rocky island with red shining waters on the right (macOS Catalina)

Hey thanks for the reply! So what happens is I open my laptop, it’s a black screen with an Apple logo and then I have two options: user and guest. This is what happens for each:

guest: Apple logo with a black screen, then progress bar until it hangs at 80%

user: I’m able to type in my password, and then a progress bar appears below and hangs at 80%.

It’s a pretty old laptop, I know my OS is High Sierra 10.13.6 if I’m not mistaken
