What exact documentation is needed for MacBook firmware reset?

I wasted time going to a so-called "Genius Bar" to get a MacBook firmware password reset. I brought along the original Order Confirmation from when my former employer had bought the machine 4.5 years ago. The order was for 4 MacBooks, including mine, but it didn't have the serial numbers for each MacBook, just the details about the configuration that all 4 shared.

The Apple rep said that the order confirmation was not good enough. Before wasting more time with another trip to an Apple Store, I'd like to know exactly what needs to be on the invoice.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 14.1

Hi An Ominous,

D.I. Johnson and Mac Jim ID have already given some good advice, but if your 15" MacBook Pro was specifically made in 2018, you can clear the firmware password yourself by restoring the T2 Security Chip firmware using another Mac. This completely erases your Mac and you'll have to reinstall macOS afterwards.

To check your Mac model, provide your serial number here: Check Your Service and Support Coverage - Apple Support

Before you start:

To restore (not revive) the firmware: Revive or restore an Intel-based Mac using Apple Configurator - Apple Support (CA)

I would also suspect that they would want to make sure the device is yours. Usually that is done with the original invoice that shows your name and the device serial number. That might be something your former employer may have to do, since it will be their name on the invoice. I don't know for sure, but the point of adding a firmware password is to protect the device from theft and somehow you are going to have to prove that you now own the device.

Let us know how it works out,
