how to fix the slowness in an iMac ?

iMac running extremely slow, spinning beach ball appears after trying to open any application.

I called for apple support at 2 times, and based of their diagnostics reinstall the macOS was needed, but that trick just worked for a few days and the slowness returned to the iMac.

iMac specs:

Processor 3 GHz 6-Core Intel i5

Graphics Radeon Pro 560X 4GB

Memory 8 GB

Fusion Drive

macOS Sonoma

I will post how I fixed in the answers and hopefully this can help you too.

1-  make a backup of the files. (this process will delete all the files of the disk).

2- use a wired keyboard.

3- Turn on your Mac, then immediately press and hold Command-R to start up from macOS Recovery. Release the keys when you see the Apple logo or spinning globe.

4- When you see the macOS Utilities window, choose Utilities > Terminal from the menu bar.

5- Type diskutil resetFusion in the Terminal window, then press Return.

6- Type Yes (with a capital Y) when prompted, then press Return.

7- When Terminal indicates that the operation was successful, quit Terminal to return to the macOS Utilities window.

8- Choose Reinstall macOS, then follow the onscreen instructions to reinstall the Mac operating system. Your Mac restarts from your Fusion Drive when done.

Hey there!

If you're still having this issue, this procedure will help gather information about your Mac which will be helpful in troubleshooting.

First, share a screenshot of your Mac’s storage information. In the Finder, choose Go > Utilities, then double-click the Disk Utility icon. (Disk Utility is located in the /Applications/Utilities folder.) Alternatively, click Launchpad in the Dock, type Disk Utility in the search field, then click the Disk Utility icon. Once Disk Utility is open, take a screenshot of the information it automatically opens to, which will be your startup disk. Next, select View > Show All Devices in Disk Utility and select the non-indented disk entry—it’s at the top of the hierarchy. Then, take a screenshot of the newly selected entry. Upload all screenshots here.

Next, use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac to help determine if there might be a hardware component at fault. When testing is complete, Apple Diagnostics shows the results, including one or more reference codes.
