group imessage won’t display the new message that shows in preview.

I can see in the preview and received a notification for a new message in a group imessage. when I open the group in the app it only shows the previous messages though. I’ve tried turning off the device and making sure I’m on the latest iOS but neither helped. any advice would be very appreciated. the device in question is an iphone 13 pro with iOS 17.1.1. the first picture is the new message in the preview, and the second shows what I see when opening the group chat.
