AirPrint no longer functions after 17.1.1 update on iPad

After the 17.1.1 update on two iPads, can no longer print to a Canon printer via AirPrint. The printer is not the issue as we can still print to it via a MacBook Air.

If your printer supports AirPrint - is set-up correctly and was working as expected prior to the iPadOS17 update - you may find that restart of your network components will resolve the problem. You’ll need to restart your network devices in the correct order. Assuming that you WiFi Router provides DNS services for your network, restart devices in this order - allowing time for devices to fully boot/restart prior to restarting other devices:

  • WiFi Router
  • Upstream wired Network Switch(es) (if any)
  • WiFi Access Points / Network Extenders
  • Other fixed infrastructure devices - such as Printers
  • Client devices (your iPad)

Restarting your iPad, after restarting other devices in the correct sequence, is most simply achieved by a forced-restart of the iPad:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

  • On an iPad with Face ID: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

If you continue to have difficulties, check to see if your iPad is using the new WiFi Private Address feature. This feature is intended to provide additional privacy and security when using “public” (untrusted) WiFi networks.

Settings > WiFi > [Your WiFi Network / SSID] - tap the “i” icon - Private Address

The Private Address feature is largely unnecessary for your home WiFi network; if enabled, Private Addressing can interfere with anticipated operation of other devices, such as AirPrint/Airplay. In such circumstances, you may need to disable this feature - and can be enabled or disabled for each individual network.

Do you have any security Apps (such as Norton) or VPN installed on your iPad? If so, these may be interfering with your iPad's internal routing table - and may interfere with AirPrint/AirPlay/WiFi Hotspot or other Apple services.

If present, it may be necessary to temporarily remove such Apps from your iPad - and then perform a forced-restart.

VPNs, unless capable of being configured to support split-tunnelling, will inhibit AirPrint/AirPlay.

Just found this too. Printed no problem from my Windows Surface PC.

Switching off the Private Address for my network (as above) and it was OK. Did this first because who wants to spend half the morning resetting every ***thing to end up with the same functionality I had on Sunday.

I already spent half a day yesterday grappling with bank’s telephone service after 17.1.1 trashed my Banking App sign in and I had to reset everything on that.

So! It’s now how many months and how many iOS updates since this thread started? I STILL cannot print from iPad.

iPhone (different iOS) WILL print. So, any work I’m doing on iPad that I need to print, I must use my phone to do that printing. Yes, you can do a full-on reset and it will print for a few hours, but after time, we’re back to square one with the error message.

I now use iPad exclusively for work, and restarting for every print job or having to use my phone to print isn’t sustainable. It’s maddening that this is still an issue.

Will it ever be addressed? Are these forums read by anyone at Apple who can escalate? Are we out on a dry beach here just flopping around??? Begging for resolution 🙏🏼

Apple invite submission of comments and bug reports via its Product Feedback portal. For iPad and iPadOS:

If submitting a Bug Report, ensure that you include details of your iPad model and installed version of iPadOS within the body-text of your report. Don't solely rely upon the pick-list - as this rarely includes the current versions.

Every report counts. Unless sufficient reports are received, Apple may not assign resources to investigate and correct the issue.

I tried all of the above, didn't have private browsing feature enabled either, no vpn, nothing, not working on any iOs device, however the printer does appear and function on the network for all Windows computers. This only started happening after the last update. Sometimes I have gotten connected to it randomly after a warning that the printer appears from a different ip address than expected. That's another reason I tried all of the steps turning everything off, rebooting step by step, etc. Printer is Canon G7000 series. Looking forward to some help, for now sending anything I want to print to my Windows devices.

Epson ET-3750 here… AirPrint has become extremely unreliable as of late. It seemed to coincide with a recent iOS 17 update but I can’t speculate as to specifically which one. Sometimes disconnecting and reconnecting WiFi helps, but even then it’s hit or miss. Sometimes it’ll print part of a page and stop. Prior to this update it was 100% reliable. Nothing else about my printer or WiFi has changed in that time.

Apple needs to fix this.

I am SO ANGRY. I don't live with my parents, who doesn't speak English as well. So I have to help them troubleshoot their iPad's airprint over Facetime. I'm ****** off that we went through all the troubleshooting steps I could possibly TEACH TO SOMEONE WHO'S COMPLETELY TECHNOLOGY-ILLITERATE, only to find out it's an iOS problem. What a waste of my time. Apple NEEDS to fix this asap! I promise you, they don't have VPN or anything fancy on their iPad, and I had them do everything I would have done if I were there myself - which is basically everything that was suggested on here already. It's an IOS problem!

All this business with not being able to print from my iPhone and IPad to my perfectly good Canon printer any longer is bull. I have had it all checked out at the Apple store, 2 IT teks at home, online with Apple and there are no good results after updating to 17.1.2. All was perfect till 17.1.2. Apple needs to fix this issue. There are thousands of unhappy customers worldwide.
