17.1.1 messages add photos or camera does not work

Since the 17.1.1 update, my messages app doesn’t do anything when I click + and then select camera or photos.

Plus, other apps also become unresponsive and I have to quit and restart them multiple times.

I have also noticed my WiFi calling vs cellular is kinda flaky. At home I need to use WiFi because cellular coverage is terrible, but sometimes it seems to stick to cellular.

this drains my battery too

I have a 14 pro max. I shouldn’t be having these problems with a new very expensive phone

iPhone 14 Pro Max, iOS 16

WiFi calls is a Carrier Specific feature. Contact your Carrier (Cellular Service Provider), the agency that issued the SIM / eSIM to you. Please see the pic below which is self-explanatory...

Note: If the Wi-Fi connection is lost when you make calls, calls switch automatically to your carrier’s cellular network using VoLTE (Voice over LTE), if available and turned on. See View or change cellular data settings on iPhone. (VoLTE calls also switch to Wi-Fi when a Wi-Fi connection becomes available.) Contact your carrier for feature availability.

When your iPhone has a low cellular signal, use Wi-Fi Calling to make and receive calls through a Wi-Fi network.

  1. On your iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular.
  2. If your iPhone has Dual SIM, choose a line (below SIMs).
  3. Tap Wi-Fi Calling, then turn on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone.

Updating iOS on your iPhone should typically not alter the fundamental functionality of the device. It's possible that there were underlying issues before this update, which you might not have been aware of previously or might not have noticed.

In general, iOS updates are designed to enhance the user experience, improve security, and fix bugs, rather than introducing major disruptions to core features. The reported issue of the screen flickering and displaying a white screen after an update is likely caused by factors that are not explicitly mentioned in your post.

iOS updates primarily focus on improving system performance, introducing new features, fixing bugs, and enhancing security. They are designed to preserve your personal data, settings, and information intact.

During an iOS update, your device's operating system is upgraded, but your personal data, such as contacts, photos, messages, and other information, should remain unchanged. However, it's always a good practice to perform a backup of your device before any major update to ensure that your data is safely stored.

It's important to note that while an iOS update itself should not alter personal details, it's possible that certain features or settings may be adjusted or improved with the update. In such cases, you may need to review and adjust specific settings to match your preferences after the update.

Always make sure to read and understand the update details provided by Apple before proceeding with an iOS update, and follow best practices such as backing up your device to minimize any potential risks or complications.

I never mentioned that I had screen flickering and I am using the native messages app. I am trying to attach a photo from my iPhone Photo Gallery or take a picture. These are native applications and had worked previously with no issue.

I get that I might have issues with other applications which are not made or maintained by Apple, but that is not the case that I am describing.

I understand when it is appropriate to use Wifi calling, but in my case when I am home, that is my only option. I will contact my carrier about coverage, but why have the feature if it is "flaky" or doesn't work?
