Connecting SD card and External SSD to iPad 6th Generation

Hello all,

I have a trip coming up to Finnish Lapland to (hopefully) see and photograph the Aurora Borealis. I will be taking my full frame Sony Camera kit as well as my wife and three kids ;).

To back up the photos, I was thinking of taking my iPad 6th Generation with iOS 16.6.1 (updates to 16.7.2 and 17.1.1 available) as well as a SanDisk Extreme 2TB portable SSD not being used.

What I have read so far is, to connect an SSD or SD card to an iPad 6th Generation, I need the Apple Lightning to USB 3 camera adapter.

Can I connect my iPad to the Apple adapter, power it via the Lightning port, and connect it to a powered USB 3 hub with the SSD and SD reader connected to the hub and move files from the SD card via the iPad to the SSD drive (with USB 3 speeds)??

Your help is much appreciated.

Your diagram certainly helps to understand your intent.

Technically, what you are attempting to achieve is possible - but likely not with native Apple iPad Apps. You would be best advised to consider using a suitable third-party file manager App, as this will offer more flexibility - in particular in being able to perform a direct file transfer from SD to SSD without intermediate or additional steps.

Of the many available file manager Apps, perhaps consider Stratopherix FileBrowser - Document Manager, or its “pro version” FileBrowser Professional:
