Neighbors airpods ‘detected moving with you’

I live in an apartment building and new neighbors moved in yesterday. I got an ‘airpod found moving with you’ notification while I was out (without my own airpods) yesterday and have gotten it like three or four times since.

I can see where it says the airpods have been detected with me, it’s just going back and forth between our shared apartment building and a different apartment complex across town that I have never been to.

It seems clear to me that I’m not being tracked since I haven’t found any airpods other than my own, and I have never been to the locations where it says it was detected with me.

The instructions for disabling the device are a bit confusing but they seem to require HAVING the device which I don’t, (I played the sound a few times and couldn’t hear it) and also I’m not clear on if it would make my neighbors airpods stop working, which seems rude. I can’t find a way to dismiss the notification other than pausing it for a day, which doesn’t really fix the issue.

Is there a way to trust the device so I stop getting notified?

If I talk to my neighbor and go through the disabling process, does that free me of the notifications or does it just ruin their airpods?
