When an AirTag is no longer within Bluetooth range of the iPhone it was paired with, it will start beeping. There is no way to disable the sound, except to remove the tag's battery.
In this case, it would make more sense for his parents to purchase an AirTag that they can place inside his toy. They can also configure it to not notify them when the tag is at certain locations.
