How do I submit a feature request for Apple Products?

Hello All,

I am a Web Developer by trade so I can't escape Apple Operating Systems for professional use in any capacity, as Safari and other browsers make it mandatory to test on MacOS, iPadOS, and iOS. However, this comes at a major dillema; Apple hardware, relative to the performance provided to their respective prices, are extremely pricey for my needs.

Considering that the latest Macbook is $1199.99 USD at the low end and that MacOS upgrades average six years, I would much rather spend $200 USD per year on MacOS upgrades on an image of MacOS I can slap onto whatever hardware I want for the purposes of web software testing than I would actually buying said hardware. I'll even consider $300 USD per year which is absurd but better than the option that exists right now. $1199.99 USD is a lot of money to throw at a laptop at once with poor specs which I only need for one singular purpose.

Considering that my use case is exclusively for MacOS versions of web browsers and not the hardware in any capacity at all, how can I bring this request to Apple's attention? Please consider that money for those of us in Appalachia and other parts of the world which aren't as well off financially as others is tight and for those of us who actually do have a use case for your software would appreciate if you gave us this consideration in answering this question. My entire web development department would absolutely love this as well, as I've asked all of them this exact same question and the answer was a resounding yes.

Edit: Thank you all for your time and I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask this question. I just don't want to pay that much money on a laptop personally.

As a web developer, you will already be familiar with HTML and JavaScript standards-compliance verification tools from W3C among others. This is your preferred target for your website; cross-platform compliance, diverging only where necessary.

You’ll also be familiar with compatibility test tooling including Browserling, CrossBrowserTesting, Comparium and such. This tooling makes running the inevitably-necessary testing somewhat easier.

Also undoubtedly familiar with running operating systems including macOS hosted at Amazon and MacStadium among other providers. Rent a Mac as you need it.

And you can get a fully functional used or refurb Mac for far less than the prices of new Apple hardware, if you are budget-constrained, or you can also test on a bottom-end Mac mini für USD$599 or USD$49.91 per month for a year, plus whatever other giblets you want or need.

It's only $999. A mini is only $599.

MacOS upgrades average six years

I don't know what this means. Are you saying you plan to use it for six years? So $99-$166/year?

If your intention is to keep up with Safari updates, I sure wouldn't recommend keeping the device for six years. You'll need a new one at least every 4 years, preferably 3 years.

Didn't you say you wanted to use it for MacOS, iPadOS, and iOS? So that's 3 platforms. It can run Linux too, for what little that's worth. Windows is a bit tricky these days. You can run all those platforms on AWS. It's far cheaper to buy outright if you have a lot of use. But considering how little you seem to want to use Apple devices, that might be a cost-effective solution.

I'm not sure what you mean by "poor specs". All Mac users were until recently running Intel Macs that were identical in performance to PCs. None of us would ever want to go back. These Apple Silicon machines are so much faster than Intel it's unreal.

Considering that my use case is exclusively for MacOS versions of web browsers and not the hardware in any capacity at all, how can I bring this request to Apple's attention?

Apple sells hardware. Why would they care if you didn't want to buy that hardware? If you don't want to buy, then don't. How much happier could a non-customer get?

Sorry. You're wasting your time. The answer is a resounding "no".

Apple products are known to have defects that can brick the entire machine, thereby demanding an entire 600$ more. They're notoriously tech repair nightmares and have only gotten worse over the years. And I would make the gamble if I had the money to blow which I don't.

You seem to have some pre-conceived and ill-informed opinions on the matter. Maybe if you invested more in supporting the people who are universally recognized as the best customers, you would have more money to blow. Isn't that the whole idea? Making more money instead of saving it?

Most of that I'm already well aware with yes. I was not aware that Amazon hosted a rentable Mac for software testing, though from looking at the options it doesn't seem like I could have it point to our dev server to actually test.

600$ is still quite a bit for a machine I only ever intend to do one thing on, and that's a bottom end one. Comparatively, I can buy a bottom-end windows machine that can fit in the palm of my hand for 150$ that can do a lot more. There's also portability to consider, as if in the event I get called at 3AM to fix the site (we're a small shop) I'm going to want to see what it looks like on, say, Safari as well on MacOS etc. Not to mention it's an Apple refurb and Apple products are known to have defects that can brick the entire machine, thereby demanding an entire 600$ more. They're notoriously tech repair nightmares and have only gotten worse over the years. And I would make the gamble if I had the money to blow which I don't.

I literally would just be happier with an image of MacOS I could just pay Apple for than any of the options you described above
