Microphone Cuts Out, ONLY During FaceTime Video

My microphone has suddenly started cutting out during FaceTime Video calls where I have to toggle its icon repeatedly to allow my voice to be heard by the other party.
This only happens during FT video calls.
It usually always happens but sometimes (albeit rarely) it doesn't happen at all.
Almost always it happens towards the beginning of the call, although sometimes it might start happening after I've been on a call for a while and occasionally, it keeps happening throughout the duration of the call.

Has anyone figured out a workaround?
