Since a recent update, the microphone remains on when texting, picking up nearby conversations when I'm not speaking. This happens to friends, too, so not just me. Any suggestions?

Thanks for posting here in Apple Support Communities. Is this happening with a third-party app or are you strictly using the Messages app to send texts? Let's check if you also have Dictation turned on. You can verify this in Settings > General > Keyboard.
