iMessage Encryption

Need an expert to answer this about iMessage and encryption.

Is there anywhere along the transmission of the message from a Mac, iPhone, iPad or whatever that can be seen unencrypted, like at a Telco before it hits Apple servers.

I have heard that a third party can read it unencrypted during its transmission.
