Can't close tabs in iPad

I can no longer close tabs in Safari on my iPad. There used to be a little "x" on the right side of the tab to close; that's gone. I went to Apple Support and was told to click on the tab I wanted to close, then click on the two overlapping squares (top right), and then the x at the top right-hand corner of the minimized tab. When I do that, it slides off, appearing to close, but the tab is still actually open. How can I close these tabs (individually)? I'm on version 17.1.1. Thank you!

Safari tabs suddenly disappearing on my iPad I'm just actively using safari as always, try to close a tab, and then and then none of my tabs exist in the next second. It just vanishes and all i'm left with is the starting page. I switch to a different window with other tabs, and I can literally see how the tabs on that window just completely vanish too, with only the starting page again. Pressing the add tab does not show these disappeared tabs, and there is no way, after researching, that I can find to recover them. This has happened to me several times with no notice and it's extremely frustrating because I keep a lot of tabs open for things I wish to go back to. Safari Autoclosing Tabs (it's already switch to manual closing) When my iPhone 12 gives a warning that storage is full, all my safari tabs automatically close. I have my closing tabs on manual and this wasn't a problem when I was on an older iOS (the one where I couldn't customize the lock screen with the time/adding weather or widgets to the lock screen). Is there a way to prevent it from automatically closing these tabs?
