mac Studio M2 Ultra - issues

Hi, posted a description of the issues I've been having with my top spec Mac Studio M2 Ultra. And Apple then removed the post because - even after advice from Apple, it was not resolved. It won't run consistently with (latest apps - Adobe suite being the main. Keeps freezing, and plenty more besides bit Apple didn't like the feedback so the post was removed. Can't get to talk to anyone from Apple, it's a problem so they don't want to know. Is this a widespread issue? Both - the top spec studio and the Apple response?

download and run this little "discovery" Utility, Etrecheck, written by a senior contributor here on the forums. It fixes NOTHING. It only reason the exist is to examine your Mac from the inside, using a whole raft of system calls, and compile a report.

If you follow the instructions exactly, the pre-sanitized (of any personally-identifiable information)report can be "Shared" to the System Clipboard, the Pasted into an 'Additional Text' reply window directly on the forums:

Yes. Don't have any VPNs. Use primarily Adobe suite, with Nikon and the Microsoft suite (Excel, Word) and little more. I did after a while add Sophos as a protector, but issues were there before and this made no difference to performance. Problems were straight out of the box. And started when switching on. Even with (new) mouse and keyboard, can take minutes for mouse and keyboard to connect (Bluetooth issue). Been a Mac customer / user since late eighties, never had any issues with any products on this scale, and this started with a very early 2(?) or whatever it was called. Used an Intel Pro for past nine years superb, apart from the hardware becoming unable to handle OS developments. Started to crash and got worse, Apple unable to recommend any solution other than replace as it was outmoded.

haven't added anything new, use limited range of apps, Adobe being most important and this has been updated to an M2 friendly version.

You stated previously that you seem to be having general performance problems.

By far the easiest way to cause poor performance, instability, overheating and crashing is to install ANY third-party speeder-uppers, Cleaners, Optimizers, or Virus scanners. or a VPN that you installed yourself. The main reason is that they are relentless in scanning your files, non-stop, looking for things virus-like patterns in Everything. When completed, they do it all again.

The idea that a third party, with no special knowledge of the inner workings of MacOS, can somehow find a simple way to protect your computer — that is not already being done by MacOS itself — suggests that the MacOS developers are somehow "holding out on you". That is absurd.

You should remove any and all (other than Apple built-in) virus scanners, speeder uppers, optimizers, cleaners, App deleters or VPN packages you installed yourself, or anything of that ilk.

Third-party file Sync-ers such as DropBox, BackBlaze, OneDrive, or GoogleDrive can ruin performance, but are not inherently dangerous.

OK, Sophos was a relatively recent addition. Been using it for years in the MacPro, added it not that long back whereas the issues with the 'Studio' were from the beginning. Firstly sourcing and installing all M2 chip versions of apps so that I could actually use it, and the start-up- always very slow. Even before anything installed. Maybe I've been spoiled using an Intel Pro for years, but none of the (many) previous macs I've owned or used long term ever had these issues. Sophos made no difference to the issues surrounding this Studio. Cleaning it out won't make any difference either.

I have the same machine using it in our recording studio with Apple Logic Pro X w/ UA interfaces and lots of plugins that we've paid for. Things don't seem to be optimized considering how such a formidable machine can run so poorly. There are no other options until this type of situation improves. Just got the Studio because the older Apple Mini we were using started going belly up with Logic. Apple gives you Mastering software with Logic now, but 3/4 of the settings won't run unless you have/get the Apple processor. In summary, I had hoped that performance would improve if I made these improvements, but it hasn't. I think that the ball is in someone else's court. Disc Utility is freaking out and causing restarts, too. When I go into Admin mode all seems to be well, but my Studio account is going on strike. Yes - Issues.

jamilfromsaintpaul--

if you have 'exactly the same problem" then please follow the directions posted above to produce an Etrecheck report, and post it back here -OR- on a new discussion.

if you do not have the same problem, please start a new discussion and differentiate your issues better. So far, "it does not perform" does not help readers help you.

Still having similar problems, now reconciled to it being a high spec expensive piece of kit that just doesn't work very well. Stopped the Sophos VPN as advised that could be the source of the problem - removed completely - little (no) difference or improvement.

It's slow. Takes some while for apps to open. Can just stop mid-process, only way then is to either kill that app and relaunch (works sometimes) or do a reboot (if killing the app doesn't work). No pattern re. apps, can be any, at any time, and not when under any real task.

Compared to the Intel Mac Pro it's third rate, although that machine, after nine years wasn't able to run the latest updates of OS. Ironically if running the OS of eighteen months ago, it would probably still be excellent as the 'crashing' started shortly after on (interim - mot major) update.

Doesn't like Bluetooth, takes ages to connect to either mouse or keyboard (latest model) so I now use the keyboard wired. Quicker and more reliable (i.e. it responds). Even connectivity with drives - via USB very slow - compared to the old Thunderbolt.

Had to spend on new M chip apps, didn't see that cost coming.

Overall - definitely would not recommend........

Studio Mac - a very poor product, big step backwards. Nothing that is even a patch on the former MacPro cylinder.
