password versus passcode

I seem to have an Apple password AND an Apple passcode. As I understand it, the passcode is the password I use to get into my computer (MacBook Air 2) and the password is the password is what Apple uses for applications like this Community; but every time I am asked for a password, I basically have to guess what to use. Is there a hard and fast rule?

Well, every time you see your full name on your Mac, use your Mac password. This is true also when you connect to Apple services and you click the button "Continue with password".

Otherwise, if Apple prompts you to enter your Apple ID (usually an e-mail address), you will need to enter your Apple ID password (the one you use on the Community, for instance.)
