Unified memory is shared between the CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, and hardware video encoding/decoding engines. It's not user-expandable on any of the Apple Silicon Macs. Whatever you order at purchase time is what your Mac will always have.

If you are trying to custom-order 24 GB but the selection is not sticking, I'd suggest contacting the Apple Store for help. I'm not having any problems getting the selection to stick here, although I did not try to proceed beyond the "Review Your Bag" screen.

Adding Memory Issue:

Do you get any error messages or popups when this occurs? Provide a screenshot of what you see, using this link: Take a Screenshot - Apple Support. IMPORTANT: Blank out personal info (i.e. names and time) by covering it with red-colored rectangles and such through use of the Photos app. Apple will know nothing your occurrence, if you don't report it to them.
