Change Apple ID that new phone is associated with.

Hello, I set up a new phone with a different Apple ID of the one I wanted. Now the iPhone is associated (back up, icloud etc) with that ID and I would like to change it to a new one. Is that possible or do I have to reset the phone.

Without knowing the exact setup and for what purpose, it is hard to know what to advise you exactly.

Basically, Apple mobile devices are designed to be single user (and user = any one ID) only. You can't really set it up to use iCloud for one thing and a different ID for other things. I that what you meant?

If you mean changed the ID on a phone, you are basically "giving" it to the other ID. Again, this has multiple paths depending upon what you wish to do. If this is for a different user, you should pretend you are selling it. What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

If this is for you, you can sign out and then sign in with the other ID. You have the option to delete content or retain it and have it merged into the other ID. However, not all data can be transferred, nor can any purchases (unless you set up family sharing with yourself).

I am going to pause at this point because it really would help to know exactly what you want to do.

Apple has two related features, Activation Lock ( Activation Lock for iPhone and iPad - Apple Support ) and Find My ( iCloud+ - Find My - Apple ), which are designed to prevent anyone else from using an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch if it's ever lost or stolen. Deactivation of either requires knowing the Apple ID and password that set the feature, or by placing a special request to Apple to reset the device. This Apple ID information essentially defines the current ownership of the device.

Here are additional resources if you are the account owner, can find the previous device owner, or have an Apple accepted proof or purchase:

● Read this article to learn how to remove Activation Lock either on the device itself or on the web --> How to remove Activation Lock - Apple Support

or this one for disabling Find My if activation lock has not yet engaged --> Turn off Find My on your iPhone or other devices - Apple Support

● Help with a lost Apple ID or password:

• For help with a forgotten Apple ID (this is likely an active email address or one used in the past), click here --> If you forgot your Apple ID - Apple Support

• For help with a forgotten Apple ID password, click here --> If you forgot your Apple ID password - Apple Support

● Reset device if you can prove to Apple's satisfaction you are the owner:

Apple can completely reset a device if a person can provide sufficient evidence of valid ownership. This is done online* at: Activation Lock support request - https://al-support.apple.com/#/additional-support Apple says, "Proof of ownership documentation is required," but does not provide many details in the article as to what is acceptable proof. Prior to this official service Apple typically required the original receipt** issued by Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller and documented provenance (so typically it would be the first owner who does this, or a descendant with legal proof of ownership transfer). Note that while this will let you get use of the device again, it will not help you with lost access to an account.

* There is a special link for this service. To save time you should use it instead of https://getsupport.apple.com/

Apple does not support account merging. You can kind of do it but it is complicated and not 100% effective. Why do you want to do this? If you are simply needing to use a different email address for your ID then just change that on the old account. It is MUCH easier.

Here's how you change the email address (Apple ID) you use for your Apple Account while retaining everything in your account:

If you have an iPhone or iPad:

1. Go to Settings, then tap your name.

2. Tap Sign In & Security.

3. Next to Email & Phone Numbers, tap Edit.

4. Tap the Remove button next to the email address, then tap Delete.

5. Tap Choose Another Email Address and enter your device passcode if asked.

6. Enter the new email address, then tap Continue.

7. Enter the verification code that was sent to your new email address. Read this support article to learn what to do if you didn’t get the email —> If you didn't receive your verification or reset email - Apple Support

8. If you encounter issues with certain services after doing this, this outdated support article may still have useful suggestions --> What to do after you change your Apple ID or password - Apple Support

Refer to the support article Change your Apple ID - Apple Support :

- If you don’t have an iPhone or iPad the support article says to, “go to https://appleid.apple.com and sign in. Then follow the onscreen instructions to change the email address associated with your Apple ID.”

- For general information, and other issues such as changes or addresses not being accepted.

- Note a recent change to the article where you can now change the email address without having to have access to your old email account.

Hi I’m not OP but I have a similar problem. I have an Apple ID and I want to make a new Apple ID. I want my new Apple ID to be the owner of my current phone. Does merging the accounts affect my actual phone number at all? Will I still be able to text and call from my number, rather than my Apple ID?

sorry, I’m not good with technology and I’m scared of horribly messing up my phone.
