Implication for changing the Apple ID

It seems that changing Apple ID is a pretty straight forward process. However I cannot find any satisfactory explanation or guide as what happens with the change in the Apple ecosystem.

For example when you change the Apple ID from the website:

  • what happens if you are already/still signed in on your Iphone (and Apple Watch) and Mac with the old Apple ID you just changed? Do you need to sign out and sign in again with the new one? It is better to sign out everywhere before changing it?
  • are there any implications in regards to iCloud backup and advance data protection? I'm assuming signing out from your old changed Apple ID will not cause any data loss, but will I be able to log in with the new changed Apple ID (the old one not in use anymore) and find everything there? No conflicts in data backups or anything?
  • Will subscriptions like Apple Music be tied to the new Apple ID automatically?

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction or share their experience how they properly did it.

Thank you!

Or do some of them beforehand. Most transitions should be automatic but there could be delay. Since you are using the same account then there should be no issue, but make sure you do it the right way and do NOT create a new account.

Here's how you change the email address (Apple ID) you use for your Apple Account while retaining everything in your account:

1. Go to https://appleid.apple.com and sign in.

2. In the Sign-In and Security section, choose Apple ID.

3. Enter the email address that you want to use as your Apple ID.

4. Choose Change Apple ID.

5. If you changed your Apple ID to a third-party email address, check your old ID email for a verification code, then enter the code. Learn what to do if you didn't get the email. --> If you didn't receive your verification or reset email - Apple Support

6. If you use services like iCloud or Messages to share with friends and colleagues, sign in to those services with your updated Apple ID. --> What to do after you change your Apple ID or password - Apple Support

Thanks for the info!

From the links you shared, it seems like a better option to sign out everywhere before making the change to avoid any conflict. But signing out of iCloud, isn’t asking you what to do to your data in the device? Delete or keep?

The support page is archived and not maintained anymore so I hope it’ll still be relevant.

Thanks anyway for taking the time to answer
