Is PhoneRescue by iMobie trustworthy and safe? I lost most of my contacts after my iPhone 12 did an automatic backup last night, following the iOS 17 update. I’ve tried going into the cloud and toggling the contacts switch. I’ve also restored a backup from a month ago. Nothing has helped. A Google search came up with PhoneRescue. Has anyone used it ??

No it won't help as contacts aren't part of the backup which is where imobie retrieves the data from https://www.imobie.com/phonerescue/ios-data-recovery.htm?ref=home
If you synced with icloud this is how you restore it Restore contacts stored in iCloud on iCloud.com - Apple Support .
If you can't retrieve it from there then maybe you were syncing them with your email provider, contact their support to see how to recover.
