I have been trying to purchase tv shows in SD, and I have followed the instructions found online which advise changing the preferences in the AppleTV+ app to SD - but even after doing so I am still not being offered SD options for purchase. I am very disappointed that Apple is making it so difficult to make selections between the options.
On what device are you trying to make this purchase?
Try on iPhone or iPad in the iTunes Store app instead. It is more clear there.
Try on PC in the iTunes app instead. I think it should be more clear there.
Try on older Macs (macOS 10.14 or earlier) with the iTunes app instead. It is more clear there.
I tried on my iPhone, Apple box for the smart tv, and my 2020 Mac. There is no longer an iTunes app for Macs - that was changed some time ago, and now there is only the Music app and the AppleTV+. At the far bottom of the iPhone's app there was a small note "also available in SD" but since my phone didn't have space to download the item, the purchase couldn't go through. I remember being able to purchase SD on my phone and watch it on another device. I ended up buying the series from another source - one that had BOTH HD and SD as clear options right at the top of the item's page.

Download is optional and separate from purchase. Your phone doesn’t need any space to make a purchase. Once purchased, it can be streamed on any of your devices that has the Apple TV app with a Library.
That is the way it has worked in the past, but not this time. I tried no fewer than 6 times, first selecting the SD option at the far bottom of the screen (only available on my phone, no such option was found on my computer or television), then tapping the correct oval for purchase, then the blue outline of a circle would spin and spin, then the message would come that the purchase could not be completed because download space was insufficient.
Please ask the iTunes Store staff for assistance when this happens.
