After many re-boots, and un-installing and re-installing Pages, the app will now open, but soon after that it stops working and I am left looking at the spinning coloured wheel. I force-quit the app, report the event in response to the invitation to do so, reload and the problem immediately recurs. Can anyone advise me of a solution, before I download Open Office?

You should be using Pages v13.2 on macOS 14.1.1. Anything earlier may misbehave or fail entirely. This will also impact document collaboration until you have Pages v13.2 (currently) installed.
Pages needs to be installed on your local drive in the Applications folder found on the sidebar of a Finder Window. If it crashes or hangs once, each time you launch it subsequently it will load its last saved application execution state. To avoid this, press and hold the shift key when you launch it the next time. See if it behaves normally afterward.
If all else fails, download the Apple Silicon version of LibreOffice v7.6.3, not only because it is a more faithfully supported office suite, but that it has more strengths and reliability over OpenOffice, and LibreOffice Writer can now open (read-only) some basic Pages v13 documents.

Thank you for your advice; I downloaded LibreOffice, which, I agree, is a useful set of tools.
The original problem with Pages persisted, but it has now been 'cured' by the latest update to MacOS, Sonoma - 14.1.2 (23B92)

Reverting to the previous operating system will require you to wipe your startup drive, install macOS Ventura, and then perform a migration from a current Time Machine backup. That will be expensive with your nervous system and time investment. I advise against this endeavor.
If you are using any Anti-virus application, or so-called Mac cleaner application, you should first follow the vendors instructions for fully removing them, reboot, and try Pages again before you proceed with LibreOffice.
The LibreOffice 7.6.3 installer simply asks that you drag and drop the LibreOffice application onto the Application folder alias to the right of it. There is nothing about that installation process that could possibly cause your iPhone to dial.
Next, you Eject the LibreOffice installer icon from your Desktop. Then, in the Applications folder, you right-click once to open (not open with) on the the LibreOffice icon; it tells you it is an application downloaded from the Internet, to which you click OK, and the Office suite then launches. You can then quit it, or use the Open dialog to try opening your Pages document.
I confirmed that I was using Pages v13.2 on macOS 14.1.1 and that it is installed in the applications folder. I pressed and held the shift key whenever I launched it, but it continued to misbehave.
I also downloaded LibreOffice v7.6.3 but every time i tried to install it, it made my computer telephone the last number I had dialled on my iphone! It did this consistently.
This propblem with Pages started after upgrading to Sonoma. I think my next step will be to revert to the previous operating system.
