How to zoom in or out with a Magic Mouse

I recently bought a Mac mini. I already had the mouse and keyboard at home out never tried them out before as I just use the touchpad on my MacBook. I'm a videographer and need to zoom in and out in fcpx a lot. However I tried zooming in and out with ctrl and then scroll on Magic Mouse but it doesn't do anything. Does anyone know what I did wrong?
