I'm trying to use a Dell external monitor with my Macbook Air

I'm trying to use a Dell external monitor with my 2021 Macbook Air. When connected, the monitor and the laptop screen are completely different, and the remote Bluetooth mouse only shows up only the laptop screen, while the remote Bluetooth keyboard operates on both the laptop screen and the monitor screen. I've tried switching between the monitor and the laptop for default display and that doesn't seem to work. Help?

Check the arrangement of the displays in Displays {Settings/Preferences}.

The Mac doesn't know where the displays are physically located, relative to each other, unless you give it a rough idea. If its idea of where the displays are located is way off, you may find that that you can't drag the pointer from one display to the other at the "obvious" place, because the Mac thinks the "boundary" is on another edge.
