What triggers the iPhone activation lock?

Does activation lock happen when someone resets the phone via restore or reset?

In the context of a missing iphone does that mean the person must have restored the device.

Basically, is it just a restore that will trigger the activation lock on.

Thanks.

Suppose who found the iPhone wants to reset it and keep it, as you said with iTunes, that would trigger the Activation Lock asking for Your Apple ID password or device passcode, and that will be triggered anytime anyone tries to turn off Find My, erase your device or reactivate and use your device. And every time you will receive an email alerting you ""For your security, Activation Lock requires your Apple ID and password, or your device passcode, before anyone can reactivate and use your device.""

Thanks Mr Hoffman but if you could just clarify does activation lock only get triggered into place once the thief has restored the device?

I have zero interest in the phone I just want to know does an email from FindMy (genuine) saying activation lock is requesting password tell me that my device is activation locked? And would that mean the device has been restored/wiped of my data until they met the activation Lock Screen?

thanks

100Clicks, Idris, MrHoffman, sorry for the confusion using 'trigger'. I know that activation lock in enabled by default.

I got the email "Activation Lock is requesting password for iPhone 6s Plus" from the genuine FindMy email address. It didn't ask me to enter anything.

The phone is still connected to my FindMy account with lost mode pending.

So I was asking does this indicate the person who stole/found my phone factory restored it and then ran into activation lock, hence why I got the email. Thanks. Hope that clarifies.

TheLittles Activation Lock information (B) and (C) are incorrect. (Activation Lock cannot be enabled remotely, is enabled by default, and is not particularly related to Find My.

Activation Lock:

I think you’re misunderstanding what I’m getting at: Being scammed with a device that is already locked, where it be in front of your, or remotely.

There is a seetting where if someone enters the passcode wrong ten times the phone erases. I thought that's what you were referring to when you said "The email is sent to YOU because they didn't manage to unlock the iPhone, with multiple attempts and wrong passcodes/passwords."

Anyway, if the thief factory restored my phone I don't care as at least my data would be gone.

Erasing the iPhone doesn't mean they can unlock it. They can't unlock an iPhone erased by you in Find My or because they input too many wrong passcodes. Any attempt to get into your iPhone erased or not asking for passcode/Apple ID will end up with an email sent to you.

They didn't restore your iPhone, they can't. The most they can do, if it's even possible is to build a phone that's not an iPhone
