Google maps app volume control

When using navigation, I try to increase the volume with my phone’s volume buttons, but it only works if the app *happens to be talking*! If she’s not talking, I just end up accidentally setting my ringer to ridiculous volume instead. It’s the most frustrating thing. Is this a bug or is there another easy way to increase app volume on the fly? iPhone 11, iOS 17.1.1
