Can I move my iMovie library to my external storage while I’m still building the project that uses that library?

I have offloaded everything on my Mac to external storage but the library for my current project is too large and taking up most of my hard drive. Can I move this library to external storage and continue working on this project or will I lose all of my progress?

Yes. When you open iMovie it will reference the library on the external drive. All projects will be intact.

Before you transfer the library, open iMovie and click on the library's name in the sidebar. Then do a File/Consolidate Library Media. That will insure that all the media in the library transfers over. Chances are that there will be no media to consolidate and you will get a notification to that effect.

Be sure that the external drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or APFS before you transfer your library to it.
