2019 A2141 model Mac Pro question on logic board components

Computer lightly used …died, wont charge. No key recovery sequence worked nor trying different ports and chargers. I removed the back and clearly observed two logic board components appeared to have blown up. The SMT NEzML7 chip (three of them) the center one had green powder like substance around it and surrounding area. Nearby, looks like an SMT cap suffered the same demise. There has never been any liquid spill or any other reason owner made to cause this. So in my laymen analysis I figured the logic board is the fault and specifically these components “didn’t like what was going on”.I noticed both fan turbines were covered in dust likely preventing adequate air flow so perhaps over heating may be the root cause. Anyway I searched for these components and no go only replacement logic boards. Anyone have any experience with this kind of failure and even better been able to replace SMT components instead of replacing the entire board? It’s worth a try on a cold day with nothing else to do.

FYI, it looks like you may have one or two chips near that corroded area which likely would need replaced or at least reflowed since I would expect their solder balls have been corroded & weakened, but they have solder balls beneath the chip which makes replacing them tricky. Who knows what things are like on the other side of the board as well.

Keep in mind the Apple MLBs are like huge heatsinks so you will need to preheat the area with a hot air station....expect the smaller components to move around as well since there will be some collateral "damage" so you will most likely need to reposition some nearby components as well.

Good luck with your project. Interested to see how it turns out if you go through with it.

Yeah, it surprises me too how one spot in the center of the laptop can have corrosion with no other signs, although like I said, water doesn't usually leave a residue trail.

Unfortunately if you replace the MLB yourself (except for an official Apple Self Repair program....I don't think that is available for a 2019 model), or have any unofficial repair, then you may discover the Lid Angle Sensor will no longer function because it is paired to the original Logic Board. This means closing the Display lid won't cause your laptop to sleep anymore. You will also lose the ability for using a fingerprint to unlock the Mac although the TouchID will still work as a simple power button. I'm not sure what other functional issues you may encounter since many of the parts are paired with the Logic Board.

So the only way I'll go forward with this is to attempt SMD component repair. I found this on another Communities blog.

"There were multiple posts on these forums just after the launch of the 16" where people found that using the USB-C charger on the left ports would cause the 16" MBPro to run the CPU at 100% and have the fans run at high speed, but simply using the charger on the right side ports corrected the issue."

Last time my wife used the Pro she said it ran hot, and the charger always on the left ports and curiously the "fried components" were near by and there was a lot of lint in the fan turbines. Just more info for now. I may look for a bad MLB so at low $ and try to swap at least the components I can visually see are problematic.

No evidence of moisture. Unit always inside so spill could be the only way to get moisture inside. But Corrosion if that’s it, seems very isolated given the center component was affected but not the two either side of it. Anyway I can’t rule anything out till I open it up more. Once I replace the board I’ll see the keyboard side for more info. Thanks

Agreed. I don't like the idea of a previous owner's information on a computer i use with personal information, so am quickly getting talked out of this project to replace the MLB, at least with a used one. Going new, the bucks are north of an AIR so no on "new MLB". Originally I asked if anyone had repaired one replacing old suspect SMD's with new components on the existing board, and have received only crickets on that one. This weekend I will entirely remove the MLB and inspect the other side for a little forensics work. I just hate giving up on an otherwise great operating and relatively new Pro. Maybe I'll buy a board and swap components.

<<. I don't like the idea of a previous owner's information on a computer. >>

it is MUCH more onerous than that. If the previous information was not cleared, you can't install -- well, anything -- because you are not the Admin.

We are using more and more reports of eBay sales where the seller did not prepare the Mac for sale, and when it arrives, it can NOT be changed.
