Depends why it didn't work. BDAqua's suggestions about using EtreCheck will certainly provide useful information - but so would your first-hand explanation of what happened. For example, what error messages were displayed, if any.

Remember to backup first as these steps will erase EVERYTHING on the computer!!!!

If you plan on keeping the iMac for yourself, then continue with the setup after step #7.

Are you planning to keep the computer after the factory reset?
If so, you can just reinstall the system software by first erasing all the content on the computer (Use Disk Utility to erase an Intel-based Mac - Apple Support) and then reinstalling the system software (How to reinstall macOS – Apple Support (UK))
