Fseventsd preventing formatting drive as APFS

Trying to reformat a thumb drive to APFS to see if it fixes another problem I’m having. Disk Utility gives me an error that fseventsd (and a different number after it each time) is preventing me from completing the process. Any ideas how to bypass it? I tried stopping it in Activity Monitor but it still did just with a different number.

MacOS Sonoma 14.4 SanDisk External SSD issue purchased the SanDisk Portable SSD for my M1 Mac air. But no matter what I did, I couldn't get it to work. Why doesn't the 'Failed to unmount' error message specify which app is using the USB storage? I get this error EVERY time I try to eject a USB storage device. "Failed to unmount [disk name] because it is currently in use." It doesn't mater if it’s a 12Gb spinning disk or a 256Kb USB thumb drive. Apple says to quit the offending app or restart the Mac. Why does NOT this message tell me WHICH app is using the storage? ……………… is this not text? [Re-Titled by Moderator]
