After recent update I can no longer check the battery on my Apple Watch by swiping upward. In fact, the only indication of battery life seems to be when the ****** thing just shuts off. How do I restore the swipe up battery check?

It just moved to the flat oval side button. Tap it once to get the Control Center with the battery ststus (see picture)
