Pairing both left and right MFI hearing aids

I recently received a new right MFI hearing aid, to replace a broken one. Now I can get my iPhone to pair with the right or the left, but not both. How can I get it to pair with both?

Pairing hearing aids to more than one Apple device I just acquired Oticon Real 3 hearing aids. Oticon clearly states these are Made for iPhone compatible. (I note Apple does NOT list this model as compatible but this may be because Apple has not updated its compatibility list recently.) Contrary to the pairing instructions provided by Oticon and Apple, I can pair the hearing aides to either my iPhone XR or my iPad Air 2 but not both. I have followed all the necessary steps including turning the hearing aides on/off before connecting and selecting Forget this Device in order to re-establish the connection. After numerous attempts I find I can connect both left and right hearing aides to one or the other Apple device, but not both at the same time. Sometimes the connection is made to one hearing aid on one Apple device and the other hearing aid to the other Apple device, but never both hearing aides to both iPhone and iPad. Anyone have an idea why this is happening?
