Adapter dropping HDMI signal intermittently

I had an apple adapter (USB, USB-C, HDMI) to connect to my MacBook Air M1. The USB port stopped working. Literally just bought a brand new one today from the apple store and now the HDMI signal drops out intermittently. I know there's no issue with the HDMI because I use it with a Windows laptop and have no issue. Why does it work for a few minutes then cut out? And why can't they make adapters that just work???
