This sounds like a GIS file. Apple's Preview app is unlikely to be able to understand a professional file like that. You will need to use some kind of professional app.
There must be something wrong with the file itself: TIFF or TIF files can be opened in Preview. Any chance you could download it again? Can you open another TIFF file?
Where did you get this file? Sometimes TIF files can be very complex and Apple's Preview might not be able to open it correctly.
What application are you reading it with before it changes color?
If it is a multi-page tiff, you can get the page count in it from the Terminal:
tiffinfo -j foo.tiff | grep -c directory
Expand it? What are you doing to expand it? Can you not just view the multipage tiff in Apple's Preview?
The tiffinfo command is not installed on macOS by Apple. This one slipped by me courtesy of homebrew and some package required libtiff which includes several of these tiff utilities that are installed in /opt/homebrew/bin.
However, there is a tiff oriented tool that is installed on macOS by Apple and it too has a means to get the page count from a multipage tiff image. It also has a man page with more options.
/usr/bin/tiffutil -info inputmp.tiff | grep -c Directory
It is a multipage file. It is viewable on a 2009 24” iMac. This imac is 2015 ?????. Ie the size is about 3000-35000
But once again, what application are you using to view the multi-page tiff image on that 2009 iMac and on the current iMac model?
That is what I used. And also converted it to jpeg and the Same thing it turns purple to view????
Yes I have redone it a few times. The file comes from the Division Of Oil And Gas it is an oilwell log of the formation.
It comes up that way when I expand it???
