So if my Mac can't update any more because it is old, that means I can no longer connect my iphone to it?

My macbook pro is from 2008. Up until yesterday I was able to hook it up to my iphone 11. After I downloaded the update on my phone, my laptop no longer recognizes my phone. There are no updates for the laptop.

MacBook Pro 15″, OS X 10.11

It looks like Apple dropped support for managing an iPhone running iOS 17, from a Mac running El Capitan. Which leaves you stuck because your Mac can't go forward, and your iPhone can't downgrade (to go back).

You might look into the third-party application iMazing to see if it does what you need. It will run on Yosemite, or higher, which would include El Capitan.
