Downloaded images can not be saved after editing "the document could not be saved" error

I have a brand new Mac Mini (2023) with Sonoma 14.1.2. It will not save an image after it has been edited. And I get a "the document could not be saved" error. This is a downloaded image and so far it is only downloaded images that will not re-save. It is not consistent some images will re-save some won't. I have checked ther permissions and they are read & write for all.

I have also tried three image editing programs, Preview, GIMP and Photos. All give the same error and can not save after an edit is made.

I do have a ridiculously time consuming workaround. In Preview, I export the image to PDF, then open that PDF and export the image to JPEG. That new JPEG can be edited and saved.

I have re-started in safe mode and run disk utility. I have reinstalled the OS. I have used the terminal to reset the permissions. Nothing seems to fix this.

So, I had a long phone call with Apple support. Apparently, Ancestry.com uses a gray color space that Apple does not support. Support suggested that I get ahold of Ancestry and suggest that they stop using this color space.

Other posts have stated that it is all 8 bit gray scale images that Apple no longer supports?!? Which is disappointing.
