Can't connect to iCloud with my Apple TV 3

Hi,

I know there are quite a few similar threads.. I've read some, tried a few things, but can't find a definite answer.

1) One thread suggested iCloud was connected to too many devices. I have removed some.. but it didn't change a thing. Adjusting the number of devices does not help.

2) Other threads suggested it was about "2-factor authentification", not being compatible with this 3rd generation Apple TV model.

One person metioned trying to get an authorization code through your phone.

But this is not needed.

When I try to log in on my Apple TV, I put my Apple ID user, then my passowrd, then click on next, and then I get a message on my iphone or Mac with me the 6 digit code to enter in the Apple TV.

So I enter the 6 digit code, but it does not work !

Could someone please confirm, and answer this simple question :

Is it possible to connect to iCloud with an Apple TV 3 ?

And if yes, how ?

Many thanks in advance for your help,

Stephanie

There have been a few changes to iCloud that may affect this.

  1. My Photo Stream has been discontinued for all users.
  2. Advanced Data Protection for iCloud as an account property may invalidate some iCloud services on devices with older software. ADP may have been activated by updating a different device (e.g. iPhone). ADP can be turned off if needed, as described in the link.

When you have an Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation) and two-factor authentication for your Apple ID, then you may be asked to type your password followed by the six-digit verification code directly into the password field. Additionally, there is a time limit, after which the code becomes invalid.

Try this: First enter the characters of your password (do not submit yet), then manually request a new verification code, then append that code to the password (no spaces or other separating characters), and then submit. That should help you get passed the time limit.

I tried this method many times. I don’t have ADP enabled.

The last mentioned method is for signing in for the iTunes Store, as different from iCloud services. iCloud may not work anymore. Apple now lists system requirement for iCloud on Apple TV as: tvOS 17 or later, which Apple TV (3rd generation) is not compatible with. The current status for the 3rd generation model is “unsupported”, so no programmer efforts will be made to make it more compatible.

This is 2024 now. Are you sure this password+code method is still valid?

Apple TV Software 7.9 for Apple TV (3rd generation) is the latest and last version for this model. That update was released in March 2022. Apple TV (3rd generation) will behave the same as 2 years ago, and basically the same as 4 years ago too, as in between was minor bug fixes, not related to signing in.
