how to switch back to old apple ID

I have an apple ID with a @live.com email address. I switched phones and but couldn't remember the password so to speed up the process of getting my new phone set up, I created a new apple ID with a @gmail.com email address. I'm trying to switch back to my old @live.com ID but it says that it is not an available email address when I try to change it in settings on the new phone. How can I go back to the old id on my phone so that I don't lose all my purchases?

Changing Apple ID to new email address Hi - I have just successfully changed my Apple ID to my new email address, and I have been able to log-in to discuss this issue using my new Apple ID. However, both my iPhone 11 and my iPad still show my old email address as my Apple ID. Having read this recent post, I am nervous about signing-out of either device, especially as I am still being asked for the password connected to the old Apple ID in order to sign-out. I have not changed my password - just my email. There have been no other changes other than my email address. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Changed my email but old one still shows I had to change my email address. My old one still shows up. From what I have read here I get the impression that I need to log out of my id. But my iphone then tells me I will lose everything I have on my old ID!! Can that be correct? How can I avoid losing data? The old email address does not function any more.
