I have brought a second hand computer that has less memory than my old computer. I work with heavy graphic files and would like to know if I can buy a large external hard drive which I can use it to back up my files for safety and secondly as a place to store files I work on on a daily basis.
If this is possible is there an external hard drive that you can recommend?

I would first start with this. I would get at least two external drives. use one for your backup, and the other for saving your working files.
when it comes to the backup drive, I would get a drive with two to three times the capacity of your local drive and use it with Time Machine. and I would use an external HDD, as IMHO, speed is not really needed with Time Machine.
but for your working files, and especially if you will be reading and writing to the drive often, I would recommend an external SSD. as far as a recommendation for an SSD, I like the Samsung T7 drive. they are a nice compromise between price and performance.

I use an external ssd from samsung and that is working well
