‘Revised’ trade in value on 1 year+ old MacBook Air

After less than 15 months, the display failed on the MacBook Air M2/mid-2022. Due to time and location constraints and not having purchased AppleCare, decided to trade in and buy a new one. Exact same model. (Yes, bad timing, but things happen). The trade in value was $130. OK, we accepted that and went ahead. Comes back with a revised trade in value of $0.00. The hassle factor at the moment was not worth getting it back and trying to sell it. Yes the screen is damaged, but seems like a perfectly working MacBook Air with a damaged screen would be worth more than nothing to Apple.

Apple support were no help. We have MANY Apple devices and feel a little bait and switch. We were totally honest in our assessment of the screen on the trade in questions.

thanks, Apple.

Since you've said you were honest about the condition of your trade-in, and you received an estimated $130 trade-in value, only to see it revised to $0.00, then I'd recommend refusing the revised trade-in value and have it shipped back to you. Then bring it in to your local Apple Store and explain what happened to them...they can offer an Apple gift card for the original estimated trade-in value if they agree it should have been worth $130.

I had something similar happen earlier this year when I traded in my 2016 MacBook Pro. There was absolutely nothing wrong with it...no scratches...no screen damage...perfect condition. I was offered $180 trade-in value online and accepted it. However, when I got the revised trade-in value when Apple's partner that handles this for them received my old MacBook Pro, it was for $0.00 (they claimed there was screen damage and it didn't power up). I refused the trade in and, when it was shipped back to me, I brought it in to the Apple Store and explained what happened. The tech that examined it said they rarely see 7 year old Macs in the pristine condition mine was in.They offered me an Apple gift card, as the trade-in transaction was already closed.

This might work for you, too. (Although I'd be surprised if it was actually worth $130 with a non-functioning screen).

Excerpted from Apple Trade In - Apple:

"Answer a few questions accurately, and once we receive the device within the specified time frame and verify its condition, you’ll most likely receive the full amount of the estimated refund."

If you followed those instructions, then you would have been asked:

"And when it’s turned on, do you see either the desktop, setup screen, or Disk utility?"

And you answered... yes?

Its trade-in value is zero.
