Open iCloud synchronization files (.icloud extension)

Hi everyone,

Somewhere in the past year between Mac OS upgrades, moving files for storage and use on multiple devices, I seem to have inadvertently moved Pages documents between iCloud Drive and Google Drive (most likely on my mac - my best guess anyway).

Now at least half of those files that I need to access have XXXX.Pages.icloud and I can't open them anywhere. I have tried:

  • recreating what I might have done and moving them around.
  • renaming them.
  • turning off Optimize My Mac.
  • making available offline in Google Drive
  • downloaded and then uploaded them into iCloud on iCloud.com

Nothing seems to change the situation. They all seem to be just placeholders and I don't know if there is anyway to get them back or not.

Any solutions would be helpful.

.icloud files are simply links. It's probable that you inadvertently deleted the real file and copied the link to Google Drive. You can check your iCloud.com files for the original but I suspect they are gone. You'll need to recover from your backup.
