Is there a limit to how many emails a folder can download on iOS Mail app?

I have folders with well over 3,000 emails, but after the initial "syncing xx of 3000" message at the bottom of the screen, when I go to a fresh install of the email account, there seems to be no further progress.

As Mail is loading my emails in date order of oldest to newest, the newest emails never download.

I'm just trying to find out if there is a limit to how many emails can be downloaded to a single folder in iOS Mail?

I do NOT want to limit the amount of emails, but there seems to be a 3000 email limit.
