Can I use a checking account instead of a debit card for Apple Pay?

I am trying to change my method of payment for ApplePay on my Mac computer and my iPhone. Can I enter a checking account number instead of a card?

It is not possible to link a checking or savings account to Apple Wallet, for use with Apple Pay. You can link the debit card (not ATM) associated with the account and transfer funds to the account or debit card. Complete information and instructions are in the Apple Support article I linked below.

That’s Google’s decision. You need to talk to Google about support.

However, in the EU, this took place today.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Apple has settled its "tap and go" payments probe with the European Commission (EC), opening its mobile wallet to rivals for free.
  • The EC said it has accepted commitments from Apple to allow rivals free access to the company's payments technology.
  • The commitments, which will help Apple avoid antitrust fines, will remain for 10 years.<<

However, they do not get access to Secure Enclave, and tokenization. Their wallets will store data within the respective app and use card emulation. So, they can have a less secure storage and less secure payment system. But, alternative wallets will be supported in EEA.

Google has always offered a less secure system of payment. In addition, Google has access to your payment information and personal information. Merchants can request that information from Google. Apple only stores encrypted data, Apple doesn’t have the key to decrypt and you personal data is anonymous and can’t be tied back to you. You information is not shared.

EEA is the European Economic Area

Hello.

The answer is yes. Here’s from Apple:

You can add a bank account to make Apple Card payments, or use Apple Cash to help pay off your Apple Card balance. The first time you choose to add a bank account, you're asked if you want to add the same bank account that you use with Apple Cash. If you select Yes, the bank account is automatically added.

Here’s a couple articles from Apple that might help: Add or remove a bank account for online Apple Card payments - Apple Support

Here is some other thoughts:

you can use a checking account with Apple Pay by linking it to a compatible debit card associated with your account. Keep in mind that the actual transaction might be processed through the linked debit card, but the funds come from your checking account.

Hope this helps.

Google Pay went end of life and was shut down in the US entirely as of June 4th of this year. The “replacement” Google Wallet is not, and will never be, available to iOS users due to Apple’s restrictions. Basically using ANYTHING other than ApplePay for iPhone contactless NFC transactions is simply not possible and is likely to remain that way.

However Apple really does need to provide direct linking to a bank account (checking/savings) like many other services do (as Google - on Android, PayPal etc. supports). If Apple is going to lock down the iPhone NFC and payment system (I get that they want to in order to control the safety/security) they need to do better.

Thanks for the new(s) info!

Sadly there’s a snowball’s chance any of us will get to talk to Google about supporting/implementing the new Google Wallet under iOS and iPhone technology. Kinda like none of us stand a similar chance with Apple…

I’m sure, based on your latest info however, Google would not be willing to offer their product. Why? I’ll bet it’s because despite the EC “…accepted commitments from Apple to allow rivals free access to the company's payments technology.

Google et.al. are still not going to get that are they? Not if, as you say, they’ll “…not get access to Secure Enclave, and tokenization”. This entails a less secure offering. If I were Google I wouldn’t and as a user I don’t want some less secure system. I’m not familiar with what you mean by EEA but less secure is less secure.

I landed here because I lost my wallet and physical cards and leave on a trip early Saturday morning. I rarely use the card itself but in the off chance contactless isn’t available I need it. If I cancel the debit card however I can’t use my ApplePay that it’s tied too. Catch-22. Ugh.

That’s why I’d love to be able to link my bank account vs my card. And with GooglePay gone I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place…
