LG Slim Portable DVD Writer not recognized by 2023 MacBook Air running Ventura 13.6.1

My LG Slim Portable DVD writer (Model SP80NB80) works fine when plugged into my older MacBook Air with Intel processor using a USB to USB-C cable. However, when I plug it into my 2023 MacBook Air with M2 processor; running Ventura 13.6.1, the Mac doesn't even see it. It's doesn't show up in Finder. The writer is receiving power but doesn't read the inserted CD and it sounds like it's stuck repeating some mechanical process. It's not broken. The Mac M2 processor or Ventura just can't see the writer or process any commands.

It would be helpful if Apple could please explain these issues and/or provide a fix.

DVD drives are a commodity unit, they work with all computers and operating systems. That said, this is a USB powered drive, correct? I have an older LG portable DVD player which works perfectly with my desktop but would not mount on my notebook. However when I plugged it into a powered USB hub it worked. I suspect your MBA USB C port doesn’t provide enough power to the DVD drive.

Useful idea dwb. I'll have to get a powered data hub to determine if this will work though. More money just to test the chance it 'might' work. At least I'll know if this was the problem or if it is truly an issue with Mac OS Ventura or the Mac M2 processor.
