I have a Family account and trying to let my child have his own music. How do I do this. Help.

i gave him an apple ID and thought I could still have him on the family accountm but now when I open music on his device, it asks him to start an acccount or upgrade. I thought he was already a family member. I dont know what to do.

iPhone 6, iOS 12

They do. Just trying to ascertain what you did.

I made one by giving him an icloud email address.

How? did you create a new iCloud account? How did you did this? Or did you create a iCloud email alias on your own account?

Seems he doesn't need one?

He does, Family Sharing works across different Apple IDs.

The other thing it seems is that music subscription itself needs to individually be a family or personal plan. By Family sharing, I thought all subscriptions or plans on my apple account would automatically be available to all family members..

Yes, for the Apple Music Subscription, it needs to be a Family to be sharable. The individual plan cannot be shared.

I will probably start by deleting the 10 year olds apple ID

No, don't do this. You should keep it, and it should be signed in on the devices he uses.

If you have an Apple Music Family Plan then he will have his own library on his devices, and will not affect your own.

Each person needs to have their own Apple ID, and can an Apple Music Family plan can be shared with them over Family Sharing.

You gave him an Apple ID? Where did you get this Apple ID to give him?

Did you create a new one from scratch?

Was this Apple ID invited to the Family Sharing group?

Is the Music subscription a Family Plan and not an Individual Plan?

What device is this Apple ID signed in to, and where on the device is it signed in to?

You will need to explain exactly what you did, before an y one can start to help you.

Thanks Phil, its funny because of course there are so many contextual questions. Thats why I usually do not ask for computer help via a chat or email. Your questions did however send me the right directions and gave me a start. I may be able to sort it now. Thank you for that.
