Screen Shot leaves a gray box on my screen

After working correctly for years, the screen shot function is now leaving a gray box on my screen (in the shape of my most recent screenshot) after I select capture. The only way that I can get rid of the grayed-out area is to restart my Mac. The problem will occur again if I attempt another screen shot. I have also tried starting my mac in safe mode. The problem persists. Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks. I am using Mac OS Sonoma 14.1.2 (23B92).
