Deleting multiple contacts on ios 17

All advice given is to use two fingers and drag over multiple contacts. As soon as I move my fingers to highlight the next adjacent contact, the first contact is deselected.

Is there a setting that I may have pressed to disallow drag to select functionality on my iPhone 14?

I don't have a Mac book anymore, I only work with iPhone and ipad.

delete mutiple contacts I need to delete one hundred plus contacts (from my former job) on my iPhone 8+ My phone says it is updated to iOS 16 but when I follow the directions given on forums it doesn’t work. Specifically I cannot highlight more than one contact with the double finger touch and drag. Is there something I’m missing?
