My mac is running on OS X Yosemite. It doesn't support most current applications. I tried to update it but there is no software update options in the systems preferences panel and at the app store no updates are available. i am trying to "upgrade" to a new OS not "update." Any tips on how to do this?

Without more information about your Mac, it’s hard to say what the latest compatible version is.
Back up your data, check the application compatibility table, click here, and then on the download link for a higher OS. A Mac running Yosemite can be upgraded at least as far as El Capitan.
Catalina and above won't run 32-bit software; if you choose one of them, use Go64 as well.
