Can't get apple watch control centre to come up, in spite of a watch reboot

Since the most recent watch software update, whenever I swipe up on the watch, I am greeted with a Day/date/time and the start of my fitness app. Tried rebooting the watch but still won't show you the control screen...any way to force a control screen to appear? Problem is that it appears as if silent mode or theatre mode is set to on and hence can't turn them off.

They moved Control Center from swipe up to the flat oval side button (see picture)

Use Control Center on Apple Watch - Apple Support


DO NOT hold the button, as that brings up the Emergency services display.


Just a quick press and release. You will find all the services you used to get via swipe up.
