AirPod 2nd gen - is this normal?

My right AirPod does not charge in the case when the case is not plugged directly into a cable. This has been happening for about 6 months but took me a while to figure out what was going on. They are used a few times a week for about 30 min to an hour at a time. I took them to them in to an affiliate shop and they sent them to Apple because still under warranty and Apple returned them and said there was nothing wrong. Below is from this morning. Everything was at 100% last night, but the right one is almost dead while the case is at 100%. Just trying to see if everyone thinks this is normal or if I should try with Apple again? Warranty expires in a few days.

Thanks for the reply! Yes, that was the first thing we did to try and fix. Unfortunately, that didn't work.

I am going to leave this up for anyone who has the same problem.

No this isn't normal. Contacted Apple again today to let them know the problem wasn't fixed after receiving them back from Apple. Completely understood if they couldn't really do anything since the warranty expires in 3 days. While waiting for online chat to connect me with someone on the phone I actually discovered the problem.

With the airpod still in the case, I can press down hard on the airpod and try to turn counter clockwise and that will occasionally cause the airpod to start charging in the case. Went from 4% to 66% while waiting for the callback. But as soon as I let go of it, the charging stops.

Luckily I have an amazing support staff. I was able to send pictures through chat of my battery widgets and then told them about my new findings and after being on hold a while they decided to replace the airpods. Unsure if it is a case issue or the actual airpod itself. They also took in the fact that the closest official Apple store is over 2.5 hours away. Hopefully this may help someone in the future.

I Had the same issue. Restarting the AirPods helped for me

  • AirPods (all generations) or AirPods Pro (all generations): Put the AirPods in their case, then close the lid for a minimum of 10 seconds.

you can also try to reset them

If your AirPods aren’t working correctly after you restart them, you can return them to their factory settings.

Do one of the following:

  • AirPods (all generations) or AirPods Pro (all generations): Put the AirPods in their case, close the lid, then wait 30 seconds. Open the lid, then press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds, until the status light flashes amber, then white.
